CCR Draft #4

4. How did you integrate technologies- software, hardware and online- in this product?

Technology was a necessity when doing this project. Before we actually could make the magazine we used Word to put the planning together and make a draft of our project. After using the Word to make a planning sheet I used my Nikon camera to go to events and take pictures. The Camera was a critical part of this project and provided, in my opinion, great quality pictures. To keep track of my progress I blogged on Blogger.com on Gmail which was a user friendly website. When putting together a magazine we used Canva.com because they provided templates that were able to change enough to make it our own design. The website allowed for several different ways to make our magazine unique compared to the other magazines. We advertised our magazine on Instagram and we used our Smart phones to communicate and access the social media account.

CCR Draft #3

3. How did your production skills develop throughout this product?

Through out the production my team and I were faced with a lot of tasks and situations that we had never encountered. The first biggest issue was not knowing how to properly take pictures of something and make it look good and even more importantly we didn't know how to take good quality pictures of action shots. After talking to others who had to take pictures for AICE Media studies in the past and having my teacher help me understand the settings on the camera i used. Scheduling photo shoots was a feat of its own. I had to set up a couple different photo shoots to get an array of photos. I was able to develop magazine production skills. Through out the magazine production i was able to produce a magazine company on a smaller scale and develop how a magazine goes through production and distribution and the tools used to promote the magazine.

CCR Draft #2

2. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?

My magazine engages multiple audiences for different reasons. Our magazine provides multiple perspective photos that will engage the audience and shows an array of color and action shots. We've created a social media platform that will share sneak peaks into our magazine and some exclusive and behind the scenes footage and photos. We are using Instagram as our social media platform to reach a younger audience who would be interested in the Sarasota High magazine as well as the adults who know how to use and consistently use social media.
Our plan is to use Grandeur to distribute our magazine locally throughout our area. They will create publicity through our community and provide a larger following. On top of using the distribution company I plan on selling our magazines at sporting events and using our school newspaper to advertise our magazine.Though physical distribution is a good method of selling our magazines, we understand that the shift from physical distribution to electronic distribution has become widely poplar. Like a lot of magazine distributors such as Sorts Illustrated and ESPN magazine, we will have a link in our social media platform, Instagram,  to take viewers to a link to buy either a physical or electronic subscription.

CCR Draft #1

1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

My product uses the conventions of multiple successful sports magazines. As a group we looked to model ESPN magazine and Sports Illustrated magazine due to the popularity of the two. Our magazines all incorporated a cover shot of people playing the sport that was ideal to the magazine. The name of the magazine "Sailor Seasonal" was bold and at the top like Sports illustrated and ESPN magazine do. Our colors of the magazine are mainly orange and black because our school colors would appeal to the audience we are trying to attract. We found that since sports magazines are known to be bought and sold to more men, the setup was more bold to attract attention of the male audience. We also found symmetry was appealing to look at and was incorporated within our table of contents. The magazines issues were separated by seasons/quarterly to adhere to the the sports theme and audience. We separated the issues into Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer season to give us enough time to fill the magazine with content. Like other sports magazines we tried to incorporate multiple shots from different angles.

3rd Quarter Submission

Target Research

Our target audience with our magazine are the students of Sarasota High school. The athletes at SHS are going to be the key objective but if we can expand to other kids who would enjoy seeing what is going on in their school community then that would be awesome. With a lot of digital distribution and Digital advertising I think the kids at SHS will be some of the easiest people to obtain.

When we looked at the social media account of ESPN we found a lot of the followers had a common interest in sports. The social media pages that followed ESPN had at least one sports related post. This is exactly how we plan on getting to our target audience.

Target Research

The Running magazine did articles and posted a lot of ads about parenting and how parents should run with their kids and be involved in the kids active life. In a way we aim to do the same thing. We want to be able to advertise to the parents who are not only parents to the kids playing the sports but who are Alumni of SHS and want to stay informed about all the sporting events and social events going on to stay better in touch with their kids and the school.

Digital Distribution

A form of digital distribution was also through social media. Since ESPN is a lot like our magazine we looked to do a lot of what they do. With over 12 million followers, they are able to distribute their content and news that way.

Distribution Plan

ESPN's idea of selling on location goes along with our idea to try and sell our magazine at the sporting events that our school hosts that way instead of the magazine going to the target audience, the target audience comes to the magazine. Numbers of distribution should be high compared to other methods because everyone at each sporting event are majority of the people who would want our magazine.

Though physical distribution is a good method of selling our magazines, we understand that the shift from physical distribution to electronic distribution has become widely poplar. Like a lot of magazine distributors such as Sorts Illustrated and ESPN magazine, we will have a link in our social media platform, Instagram,  to take viewers to a link to buy either a physical or electronic subscription.

Digital Distribution

Image result for sports illustrated social media
Sports Illustrated chose to adapt with the times and try to distribute their magazine on social media through Facebook. ESPN has kept more up to date with their distribution with putting links into their social media to connect the audience into their subscription cites. This has been highly productive and makes up more than half of the money the company makes.

Target Research

One of the largest ways Sports Illustrated advertises for its magazine is through it's yearly swimsuit issue. They take advantage of this issue and market this issue more than other editions. For example, on YouTube, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit channel has around 728,000 subscribers and most viewed video is over 51 million views.

YouTube would be a viable platform to promote my group's magazine because unlike other forms of social media, an established following is not required to do well. Another advantage of using YouTube can be reaching a larger, younger audience and peak their interest in magazines. Also used to promote but not as popular, is Sports Illustrated's main account for reporting sports news.

On the Sports Illustrated's website, they are advertising a new service from "SI"

The new streaming service creates a new from of media for the brand and competes with ESPN+. This is another way to spark interest with younger audiences in an attempt to draw them into the magazine world.

Distribution research

Distribution of a magazine can include door-to-door selling, negotiating with retailers and local businesses to stock your magazine, postage costs, labeling costs, delivery costs to retailers or businesses and other related expenses. Before you speak with magazine distribution professionals, you need to decide which of these services you do and do not need.

ANTONOW, A. “Making the Most of Magazine Circulation and Distribution.” Business.com, 22 Feb. 2019, www.business.com/articles/making-the-most-of-magazine-circulation-and-distribution/.

One of the biggest sports magazines is the ESPN Magazine. ESPN is owned by Disney so that allows for the magazine to be highly advertised. Disney has a sports complex contributed to the ESPN network called "ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex". In the sports complex the magazine is highly advertised as well as sold at the complex. The Complex holds many sporting events and tournaments for all sports which draws in the audience that the magazine wants to attract.

Marketing Plan

Social Media:
We've created a social media platform that will share sneak peaks into our magazine and some exclusive and behind the scenes footage and photos. We are using Instagram as our social media platform to reach a younger audience who would be interested in the Sarasota High magazine as well as the adults who know how to use and consistently use social media.

Collaboration with School Publication:
We decided to sit down with out school publication who writes the Year book and the Sarasotan at our high school. The Schools publication team would be able to advertise for our magazine so that students have the opportunity to not only see our magazine but feel more comfortable investing in it when there is a program like the School publication team backing it.

Collaboration with School Athletics Program:
Since our magazine targets the athletics at out school we decided that the smartest move to sell our magazine would be to talk with the School Athletic Program. The Athletic Department could have our magazines for adults, students, faculty, and players to buy during the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons.

Revison

I edited the cover so that the image was sharper and had more color to pop out at the audience. I also put a grey shadow around the sub-heading because when people reviewed my paper they mentioned the text got lost in the background. I was also able to line up the numbers with the text so that it follows structure.

Photo Shoot revisions

I went to a Girls Varsity Soccer game so that i could get better pictures to put on the cover if I got a good enough photo. This photo shoot went really well because I brought a larger lens to capture everything on the field and I was able to understand the camera settings a little better this time around. I might edit them so that they look better and capture the play of game.

Revision

I'm posting the table of contents side-by-side so that the changes are easily visible. I matched the line color with the text color so it looks more official. I changed the picture to the left because it seemed to look more like a filler than a meaningful picture. The picture was of girls soccer so that there weren't just guys soccer pictures in the magazine. I added the black box behind the text so that the text was easier to read.

Feedback/Revisions

After presenting my project to my peers I got the following feedback.

Cover:
- The "Starts Today" text blends in too much with the background
- Make the sub-text a little neater
- See if you can get another photo that has better reolution

Table of contents:
- The shades of orange are a little different so trying to make them all match
- The text in the TOC needs to be arranged so the space is used more efficiently
- Text is hard to see so enlarge text

Article:
- Put page numbers on the articles
- Make page numbers correlate to the TOC and flat plan
- Put descriptions on all pictures
- Vary the type of pictures in the article
- Solid Color page might be too expensive

I plan to try to fix a lot of these problems as much as I can. I know that some of these will be harder to do than others like matching the font color with some background colors but I'll try my hardest to do so. I also know that the change of the solid orange background might not be a big deal because if I post digitally like most magazines are then I won't have to worry about the cost of ink.

Use of Conventions

My magazine incorporates the athlete social group in our school. I also am reaching out to the parents of the student athletes. I know that the parents would want to be apart of the athletics going on in the school. In my magazine I used certain conventions that other sports magazines use. I incorporated the original "Sailor Seasonal" sign on my pages like ESPN does to brand their product. I also did not over complicate the cover with words like magazines Soccer Bible and Surf Magazine.
